Rubber Duck, Anyone?
May 1st 2008 by Sou in Fun, Personal, Crazy, UniversityAs 2pm was approaching, so was my time to give a presentation on The International Phonetics Alphabet (IPA) in my Phonetics and Phonology class. Oh the horror, oh the pain! Anyway, I finally made it to class, barely ready to present but with luck on my side, I was ready to rock and roll.
Nearer to the end of my presentation, I informed everyone in class I prepared a game; something to stimulate their “love for the IPA” (Amethyst, you SO missed what just happened next). For the sake of breaking the routine in my speech, I decided to throw in an Arabic word, and that’s when I said: “And I’ve prepared a little game, because I wanted to “ahameekom” [أحميكم], which basically translates into “give you a shower”. The word I wanted to use was “ahameskom” [أحمسكم]. A perfect example of when [relatively] stupid people happen to normal words.

I hope my unfortunate run-in with the Arabic language drew a smile on your face or helped you let out a suppressed chuckle. Either way, I’m glad to be of service. :)
I wonder when the next language mishap is going to happen next!
Till next time world.

:) you remind me of when I used to do them final presentations..

Chika: Brutal, absolutely brutal!!!
Moey: You should’ve freaking been there when I said it! HAHA

Nani: Definitely! I totally needed the comic relief though! haha
Hehehe the best thing what with the dust outside :P Highly justifiable!

Amethyst: You were asleep?!! Weren’t you in Shuwaikh?!!

LOL! Cute :) If it makes you feel any better I’ve once cited a statistic as being “watya” in an Arabic presentation rather than “monkhafeda”. Those who speak slang Arabic will realize the full repercussions of the first word :)
Juka: HAHAHAHA! That’s as bad as “ahameekom”!!!
