Katy Perry Thinks UR So Gay | December 3rd 2007
Let me introduce you to a very vivacious young lady: Katy Perry. I first heard of Perry back in March, and her tracks are sure to captivate anyone who is in dire need of change from the rubbish on the radio.
Signed with Capitol Records, Perry’s EP, ‘UR So Gay’, was released November 20th - and what did yours truly do? I waited till it turned 12 am (3 am Kuwait time) so that I could download it from 7Digital where I preordered it, and it was definitely worth the wait! Included in the four-track EP is the original edit of ‘UR So Gay’, ‘UR So Gay (Junior Sanchez Remix), a cover of The Outfield’s ‘Use Your Love’, and finally a melodic ballad titled ‘Lost’.
What you’ll first notice about Perry is how she showcases different personalities in her songs. From the feisty Perry in ‘UR So Gay’ to playful (if you know what I mean) in ‘Use Your Love’, where she sings with much more “oomph” than The Outfield did in the original; opening the song with a different introduction than Outfields she sings: “I know you know my boyfriend’s out of town/let’s have a drink and talk it over.” Then there’s the lost and vulnerable Perry, wondering if there’s “a light at the end of the road,” in ‘Lost’.
Don’t be fooled by the title of ‘UR So Gay’, she isn’t attacking homosexuality, on the contrary, it’s a break up song about her straight (yes straight) ex-boyfriend. When questioned by OUT Magazine if the song would be offensive to her gay listeners, Perry replied, “I think when everyone hears it, they’ll laugh. It’s very funny, positive and kitsch.” Lyrics of the second verse:
I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf
While jacking off listening to Mozart
You bitch and moan about L.A.
Wishing you were in the rain reading Hemingway
You don’t eat meat and drive electrical cars
You’re so indie rock it’s almost an art
You need SPF45
Just to stay alive
Go ahead and download ‘UR So Gay’ for free while you still can!
