I Confess…
March 21st 2008 by Sou in Music, Personal, YouTubeI’m allergic to the shit on the radio, and I always [almost] have my iPod Shuffle or Video recharged to accompany me on whichever journey I’m heading off to. Today however, as I plugged in my iPod Video to the casette-route thing, it died 10 seconds later; apparently I had forgotten to recharge it, and to my horror and dismay, I forgot to grab my iPod Shuffle. What is a girl to do in situations like these? Curse the flipping radio station of course because it’s the only alternative I’ve got.
Let me explain to you the reasons I detest the local radio station with a burning passion:
The constant repetition of - what I personally think is shitty music - R&B, Hip Hop, Rap, and the oh-so-painful genres out there. If it’s not the music that induces feelings of excruciating physical displeasure,it’s the obnoxious DJs with no taste in music whatsoever, who also lack a sense of humor, and possess accents that make me cringe and want to call in and say, “If you speak a language in an accent only you and your reflection understand, then please, please, please don’t speak it!” I won’t name names, but seriously, if you listen to Radio Kuwait FM 99.7, you’ll understand the torture I have to go through whenever I forget my iPods and I’m faced with the sole (and brutal) alternative of switching to the excuse of a radio station.
With that being said, never in my life have I been so grateful for forgetting to recharge my iPod and switching on RKFM 99.7. Yes I know you think I’m either a “Class A” hypocrite or a complete loon, but as I was driving back home this afternoon from the market (what a “journey”), ‘Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)’ played. My friends, this song, is by far, one of the best songs in the history of all songs. I don’t care if you don’t like it, and I think you’re an idiot if you don’t. For those of you who don’t know it (shame on you!), it’s based on a column a journalist called Mary Schmich wrote in 1997 in the Chicago Tribune. Baz Luhrman, a director, then turned it into a spoken-word song (spoken by Australian actor Luke Perry).
So what am I trying to say?! Apart from the fact that RKFM 99.7 actually plays a good song every indigo moon (I still hate the station, there’s no changing my mind about that), I’m trying to say this song has totally soothed some of the exploding thoughts in my head, the world won’t come to an end because I didn’t get as good of a grade as I wanted on a test. Feelings of constant confusion regarding a certain relationship aren’t worth the sleepless nights, weight should be dealt with healthily instead of moping about on how fat we feel, etc, etc, etc.
Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
There is more truth in Shmich’s words than one would ever think possible.
Till next time world.

I don’t listen to the radio at all.
And the song, wtf?! It’s actually a song?!
Amethyst: It’s got music in it, doesn’t it? So there, it’s a song! ;p
I hate radio, but I like this song :D
It reminds me of a song by Cafe del mar, called The Hypnoist .. You should listen to this too
& Grrr. @ Amethyst
Operon: You hate the radio?! Cairo’s Nile FM is WAY better than RKFM 99.7! Believe me! Well i>anything is better than our local English radio station. ;p
You poor thing, still at war with Amethyst!
Forgot about this song, been a while since I heard it. I think this song is shit, sorry guess that makes me an idiot. It only really becomes anything half way through it with the female vocals. I guess I can at least acknowledge its attempt to be trippy.
Listen to DJ Shadow, the KING of trip hop
“this song, is by far, one of the best songs in the history of all songs”
Didn’t you say the same thing about your previous songs? XD
Btw this song is old! :O I think there’s a remix as well.
Stephen: respect the fact that you don’t like it, but that doesn’t change the fact that I think you’re an idiot for not liking it. I still like you though ;p
Question though..you don’t like it as a “song”, or you don’t like the Shmich’s words? I can’t imagine any other form of delivery than what Lurhman set out: spoken word. I think if the essay was transposed into a sing-song sort of song, it would’ve lost its true essence.
3baid: Hence why I said, “one of the best”, because there are so many out there that deserve being called “the best” - at least to me :)
I don’t like it as a song, but you’re right if the words were delivered in a sing song way it would have been cheesy.
that song is hot!! i loves it!
and sorry u have to go through such shit .. i sometimes listen to 96.9, they play some OK music .. much better than RKFM.
RKFM have retarded DJ’s!! Someone should write about them!
Hussain: People HAVE written about them! And the DJ everyone ranted bout had a bitch fit on air! *sigh* The crap we have to endure…
well … shame on me i haven’t heard it before :D
but it’s truly great!!! thanks
Loving the new theme :)
I’m proud of you, how you made your own changes!
